Mental health advocate competes at Mr. Gay World 2019

John Jeffrey ‘Janjep’ Carlos, a 41-year-old, businessman from Cavite, will represent the country at Mr. Gay World 2019 pageant to be held in Cape Town, South Africa from April 28-May 5. Carlos, who won the title Mr. Fahrenheit 2019 on March 31, joined the pageant for gay men to bring his advocacy on fighting depression through his #IllnessToWellness campaign on a global scale.

A former college volleyball and varsity player, Carlos is a property consultant in a real estate firm and runs an online business with his partner of five years. He is a health enthusiast, works out regularly in a gym and loves to travel.

Carlos won as Mr. Gay World Philippine on his second try, losing in 2017 to John Raspado who went on to win Mr. Gay World 2017 in Spain. Carlos succeeded Gleeko Magpoc who volunteered to compete in last year’s edition.

In his winning answer during the 17th Mr. Gay World Philippines/Mr. Fahrenheit 2019, Carlos said "I think I am the best representative of the Philippines because I always work hard on all the tasks I am committed with. I will also carry the hope of those people with depression because depression is real."

Mr. Gay World delegates compete in formal wear, swimwear and cultural costume and will be judged on how they could best help the LGBTQ community on social platforms. Jordan Bruno of Australia, a reality TV chef and cookbook author, is the reigning titlist. Mr. Gay World 2019 was moved from Hong Kong to South Africa following an announcement from the Chinese organizing company that they could not proceed from hosting the event in view of the clampdown on LGBTQ events by Chinese authorities.
