Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters promotes the Philippines

In her first official public appearance, Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, together with 12 co-candidates in the recent 2017 Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas, USA, visited Luneta and Intramuros, the first of her scheduled activities during her week-long stay intended to help promote the country as tourism destination in cooperation with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Miss Universe Organization (MUO).

Nel-Peters, the second woman from South Africa to win as Miss Universe, was joined by Miss Philippines Rachel Peters and Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere at the wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument and tour of Fort Santiago on Wednesday.

MUO president Paula Shugart has expressed interest in bringing back the Miss Universe pageant in Manila for the fourth time and confirmed the preliminary discussion between MUO and DOT to have it whether this year or the following years.  Shugart considered the 2016 Miss Universe held in January 2017 at The Arena Mall of Asia as the best ever Miss Universe show of all. “It’s no secret that we love the Philippines and it’s great for the pageant to be held in Manila,” Shugart said.

“I love your country, the Philippines is a beautiful country. Filipinos are so warm and friendly. I received a wonderful necktie with an image of myself given to me as a gift,”” Nel-Peters said.

Nel-Peters, Mittenaere and the rest of the visiting Miss Universe beauties were to attend the DOT’s Christmas party on December 7 and the following day, will visit three provinces in three groups. Nel-Peters and the beauties from USA, India and Singapore will visit Batanes, while Mittenaere will travel to Bohol with Miss Russia, Netherlands, Korea and Canada. Peters will go to Camiguin along with the candidates from China, Italy, UK and Malaysia.

A gala and awards night for women will be their last activity on December 9 before their departure on December 10. Words by Eton Concepcion / Photos by missuniversepresssite and Eton Concepcion
