A year and a month have passed since a
young, confidently beautiful woman stood tall on the world stage and gave
millions of Filipinos a moment to be proud of, and a cause for great
celebration. Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach’s
victory at the 2015 Miss Universe pageant was a triumph of courage, perseverance
and self-determination.
For Wurtzbach, winning Miss Universe
was fun and a life-changing experience. She confides missing being a candidate.
She has changed a lot but remains humble.
She has come a long way from her moving to Cagayan de Oro at the age of
five, to her first try at modeling at 11 and starting acting at 14 to help earn
a living for her mother and sibling.
“Three years was such a long time and
there were times when I asked myself if it was the right decision. Good thing
is that it paid off,” Wurtzbach recalled about her long quest to the Miss
Universe title.
In a recent one-on-one TV interview,
Wurtzbach said she considered facing criticisms as the hardest part of her
reign as Miss Universe. “I learned how to deal with them and I knew it was part
of the job,” she reasoned out.
Wurtzbach also said she wanted to
change the stereotype beauty queen, one who could not crack a joke, laugh out
loud, who would always be very cautious, graceful and reserve as people would
expect them to be. “I want beauty queens to be relatable and to be real as
possible,” said the reigning Miss Universe.
Asked how she would best describe Pia,
she answered “someone who is relatable, authentic, transparent, and also
unpredictable, which could either be good or bad.”
“I want to try Hollywood. I want to go
back to New York, to experience the Big Apple like someone who is living in New
York, which I did not experience as a Miss Universe. I hope to continue doing
what I want to be doing.” Wurtzbach also posted on her plans after her reign,
“I will continue to work with the Miss Universe Organization as there as still
modeling contract that needs to be fulfilled.
Wurtzbach, who looked elegant and
classic in a black evening gown during the Governor’s Ball Welcome Dinner at
SMX Convention Center, has been working extraordinarily as Miss Universe
spokesperson on AIDS prevention in special gatherings including a high-level
meeting with the United Nations. She has travelled in Canada, Peru, Ecuador,
Cayman Islands, Panama, UAE and Singapore as part of her duty as Miss Universe.
Wurtzbach is ready to pass on her
crown during the 65th Miss Universe coronation at the Mall of Asia Arena on
January 30. A favorite of everyone at
the Miss Universe Organization, including its president Paula Schugart, Wurtzbach
would remain forever in every Filipino’s heart. Special Report by Eton B. Concepcion/Photo by LCS
