The competing delegates to the 65th Miss Universe pageant have the support of their country’s Ambassadors and Consuls officially residing in Metro Manila including Miss Guyana Universe 2016 Soyini Fraser who was feted with a reception organized by the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Guyana, Mr. Joseph D’Oliveira held at the Tivoli Royale in Quezon City on Tuesday.
Fraser, a 26-year-old, 5-foot-9, professional model, dancer and actress, is one of the earliest to arrive in the country for the Miss Universe contest on January 30. An aspiring Christian Child Psychologist, the Georgetown native has been working with the less fortunate elderly and children by empowering them through mentorship.  She is appointed as a Special Ambassador by the Guyana Tourism Authority and plans to share and promote the warmth of the Guyanese people with her fellow candidates at the Miss Universe competition.
“While I have been competing in several pageants for the last five years, I still feel nervous. I am especially afraid to trip on my high heels during the evening gown competition. I am excited to ride in your famous ‘jeepneys’ and to see what Manila has to offer,” Fraser, who speaks fluent English, said during the reception.
“My primary concern as Miss Universe Guyana 2016 would be the Plight of the Elderly who after giving the best years of their lives to the development of the family unit, community and the country, who are often times left to fend for themselves and are treated in some cases as non-existent in their later years,” Fraser said of her chosen Miss Universe advocacy.
Fraser, who has competed but unplaced in Miss Erath 2010 and Miss Grand International 2015, has a tough goal to accomplish of Guyana its first placement in Miss Universe pageant. Guyana has so far only achieved several runner-up finishes in Miss World in the late 60s, including 1967 second runner-up Shakira Caine, the second wife of British actor Michael Caine.
Guyana, the fourth smallest and the only English-speaking country in South America, is considered a Caribbean country situated east of Venezuela and north of Brazil, both powerhouses in the Miss Universe contest. Words and photos by Eton B. Concepcion
