Katarina Sonja Rodriguez was adjudged first runner-up in the Miss Intercontinental 2017 pageant won by Veronica Salas Vallejo of Mexico during coronation night held recently at Sunrise Garden Beach Resort in Hurghada, Egypt.

The 24-year-old, 5-foot-7, stunning model was also named Asia and Oceania Continental Queen. Miss Netherlands Cathelijne Heppenhuis was named 2nd runner up and the Miss Intercontinental Europe, while Miss Brazil Amanda Cardoso and Miss Colombia Lizeth Villanueva finished as 3rd and 4th runners up, respectively. Miss Korea Lee Su Jin rounded out the 6 finalists as 5th runner up in the 46th edition of the pageant featuring more than 50 contestants from all over the world.

Rodriguez, a model and former MTV VJ hails from Antipolo, Rizal has a degree in philosophy and business management at the De La Salle University. The “2014 Asia’s Next Top Model” 2nd runner up duplicated the first runner up finish of Christi Lynn McGarry in 2015. Rodriguez wore a see-thru, white Filipiniana as national costume designed for her by Francis Libiran.

“The most important thing that I have learned in joining Miss Intercontinental is an Arabic word named after one of the Sunrise Resorts and that is Meraki. It means to do all things with passion, soul, and creativity. When I heard this word and its definition, it resonated with me [un]til now and I think it will for the rest of my life. Therefore, that is the most important thing I learned while participating at Miss Intercontinental—to do all things with soul, passion, and creativity,” Rodriguez answered during the final Q&A portion.

Hoping to become the first Filipina to be crowned Miss Intercontinental prior to flying to Egypt for the competition, Rodriguez posted in her Facebook to thank her all her supporters,“It’s okay. It was a tough ride. I miss my country, I miss all of you.”  Rodriguez is the last Bb. Pilipinas queen to compete abroad as the pageant was postponed in December 2017.  Words ETON B.
