Devi’s Mindanao Tapestry Fashion Show, featuring the Neo Ethnic Fashion
collection of renowned designer Renee Salud and the Mindanao Weavers, was successfully
held at the Grand Ballroom of Marco Polo Hotel Manila on Monday night.
Conducted in
cooperation with the Department of Tourism, the modern ethnic fashion
extravaganza is part of initiatives to promote the indigenous works and
materials of tribeswomen weavers of Southern Mindanao. Showcasing the use of
local fabrics of Mindanao, the event gave fashion enthusiasts a peek into the
exemplary beauty and richness of Mindanao’s indigenous culture epitomized in
music, dance and traditional clothing, and enhanced their appreciation of the
Philippines’ cultural heritage.
DOT
undersecretary Katherine de Castro conveyed her department’s support to the
promotion of Mindanao indigenous fabrics and was proud of the Mindanao Tapestry
fashion collection which was first launched during the DOT-led
hosting of the Miss Universe pageant.
The Mindanao
Tapestry collection featured indigenous woven fabrics and intricate designs, a
fusion of traditionally woven cloth into contemporary wear in a collaboration
between Salud and the Mindanao ethnic weavers which was conceptualized and
initially presented during the Miss Universe pageant side event in January 2017
when 29 of the candidates took center stage wearing the artistic creations from
ten members of the Fashion Designers Guild of Davao.
Salud, who
learned the ropes of designing clothes in a store’s cutting and sewing
department, has been known for advocating the use of indigenous materials in
her all fashion shows. The country’s fashion ambassador, who discovered the
likes of Melanie Marquez, Chat Silayan and Desiree Verdadero, considered the
Mindanao Tapestry fashion event as one of the highlights of his successful
career.
Salud, who
hails from Batangas, worked in Davao for 15 years learning about the southern province’s
rich weaving resources and tradition. He took pride of the native’s artistry
and has since championed its promotion and development before the international
fashion community.
Mindanao
Tapestry, the Neo Ethnic Fashion of Salud and Mindanao weavers, used raw
materials from the different Mindanao provinces such as Tinalak of Lake Sebu,
Inaul of Cotabato and Yakan of Basilan. Words
